Texting Causing Neck pain?

Flexing your neck to look at a phone in your lap requires isometric contraction of the neck extensor muscles. This position for extended periods of time, will start to cause pain. This can cause a loss of curvature, or lordosis, in the neck leading to neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches, fatigue and irritability. Bringing the phone up to eye level relieves the stress on the neck.

Your smart phone may be hurting you more than you think

Your smart phone may be hurting you more than you think. These days it is rare you don't see someone texting or surfing the internet on their phone. Over time, however, you may notice some pain in the base of your thumb. It may have started as a mild ache but has now progressed to an intense pain!  But what is this pain? You may be developing myofascial thumb pain and tendinitis of the thinner eminence.

This condition refers to a variety of symptoms which stem from the use of hand held mobile devices with typing/texting capabilities.  Because of the fine and repetitive nature of the movements needed to operate these devices, overuse can lead to the development of joint, muscle, and tendon inflammation, tightness and restriction, and either generalized or specific thumb pain.

Chiropractors can help with your thumb pain, just like your back pain. Bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage all respond well to chiropractic care and your thumb is no different.  First, you should rest your thumb.  Stop texting so much! You should also apply ice for 15 minutes at a time to the thumb. Chiropractic care includes: ice, adjustments, electric stimulation to the region, soft tissue work and ultra sound. Contact Rosa Rehab and see what we can do to help you reconnect with the world of texting and surfing the internet!

Feng Wins King of the Mountains Jersey at Taiwan

getimage

Champion System Pro Cycling Team's Chun Kai Feng took home top honors in the king of the mountains classification Sunday at the Tour de Taiwan after securing and protecting the jersey since Friday's Stage 5.
Champion System Assistant Director Chris Wherry said he was proud of the team's overall effort to preserve the jersey in a race that saw Zach Bell win Stage 4 and teammate Adiq Othman earn four top five finishes, including fifth on the final stage.
"I am very pleased for the team," Wherry said. "Especially for Zach's stage win and Kai's KOM jersey."
With no categorized climbs on the final stage, a 58-kilometer circuit race through Taipei City, as Feng needed only to finish the race to secure the jersey. When a breakaway failed to materialize, the intermediate sprints turned into field sprints. Othman took third in the first and was runner-up on the second.
Rain started to fall as the peloton hit the final lap, and what looked to be a perfect lead out by Champion System for Fabian Schnaidt was ruined in a crash with two corners to go.
"I'm very bummed at the lost opportunity," Schnaidt said. "I thought I was going to have a great finish."
Hayato Yoshida (Shimano Racing Team) took the win ahead of Benjamin Giraud (Team La Pomme Marsielle). Othman's fifth place added to his fourth on Stage 3, fifth on Stage 5 and third on Stage 6. He finished the race as Champion System's best-placed rider overall in 11th, 47 seconds behind winner Bernard Sulzberger (DRAPAC Cycling).

Sugar Addiction

Many of us focus on a weight loss by concentrating on lowering fat intake or counting calories; however, many of us fail to consider the role that refined sugar plays in our diets and in contributing to our growing waistlines. Large amounts of refined sugar are often hidden in many of the foods and drinks we consume every day without us even knowing it. Sugar can harm the body in the following ways:

Suppressing the immune system.
Contributing to hyperactivity, anxiety and depression.
Increasing the risk of coronary heart disease.
Interfering with the absorption of calcium and magnesium.
Contributing to diabetes

A few tips to help reduce the sugar in your diet include:

Learn to enjoy foods that are naturally sweet, without added sugar (fruits).
If you are using a recipe that calls for larger amounts of sugar, cut back the amount suggested.
Use spices and herbs such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger to enhance the flavor of foods naturally.
Use dried or fresh fruit or frozen fruit juice concentrates to sweeten cereals and baked goods instead of sugar.

All of these suggestions will not only help you with your weight loss goals, but will also help you be more healthy and help prevent Type II diabetes.
