Snow Shoveling Techniques to Prevent Low Back Injuries

One of the more common causes of back injuries during the winter months is snow removal. Using the wrong body mechanics when shoveling snow can put undue stress on the lower back and lead to a painful muscle strain, or a disc herniation. When you step outside to start getting rid of that snow, remember it is important to have the right snow shovel. An ergonomic snow shovel can help take some of the effort out of your snow removal chores. A shovel with a curved handle or an adjustable handle length will minimize painful bending.

Even though you may not think of shoveling snow as an exercises, it sure will work those muscles! Make sure you stretch the neck, low back  and shoulders before you attempt to shovel! Some easy stretches include: hamstrings, double knee to chest exercises, and lateral neck stretches.

It is also important to pace yourself out there! Take breaks, don't try to remove of the snow all at once. Shoveling small piles instead of large piles is a good way to help prevent back pain.

Using proper lifting techniques are also important. Bend at the knees, not the low back when you go to lift the snow. Always face towards the snow, not standing sideways. Do not twist your upper body when you throw the snow. Always pivot your whole body to face the new direction. Another tip is to wear good boots that have good treads to help decrease the chance of you falling on some ice!
