“Turf toe” is used to describe a sprain of the ligaments around the big toe joint. It is commonly associated with football players who play on artificial turf; however, it affects athletes in other sports including dance, soccer, basketball, gymnastics. It’s a condition that’s caused by jamming the big toe or repeatedly pushing off the big toe forcefully as in running and jumping.
The most common symptoms of turf toe include pain, swelling, and limited joint movement at the big toe. The symptoms develop slowly and gradually get worse with time if not treated properly.
What is the treatment for turf toe? At first it is important to rest, ice, compression, and elevate that foot. A chiropractor can also work with you on correcting any problems in your gait that can lead to injury and on developing training techniques to help reduce the chance of injury. Along with doing this a chiropractor can perform a soft tissue technique called Graston and cold laser on the toe to help heal the sprained ligaments.
