15 States Dead From Meningitis Steriod Shots

Two Hundred and Five People in 14 States are Infected with Meningitis Traced to Contaminated Steroid Shots and 15 Dead

Dan Hart from the Bloomberg News reports "Two hundred and five people in 14 states are infected with meningitis traced to contaminated steroid shots, which have left 15 people dead, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Sunday. The outbreak has spread to a new state, New Hampshire, the CDC said. The others are Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. Two facilities in Texas have been identified as receiving the contaminated steroid, and one case of meningitis has been reported so far. A Central Texas woman who was treated at Dallas Back Pain Management is hospitalized, according to public health authorities. About 14,000 people are believed to be at risk for infections traced to vials from a Framingham, Mass.-based pharmacy that mixed the steroid and sold it to 75 hospitals and clinics in 23 states, the CDC said. The company in question, New England Compounding Pharmacy, was sued last week by a woman who received a steroid shot and got fungal meningitis.

Injections of the tainted steroid, an epidural shot used to treat neck and back pain, were given starting May 21, the CDC said."
